Brenchley and Matfield’s ‘truly inclusive atmosphere, ambitious curriculum and exceptional teaching of phonics’ praised by Ofsted

Brenchley and Matfield Church of England primary school has been confirmed as a ‘Good’ school by Ofsted in their July inspection of the school.

Starting his report with noting that pupils ‘rush to come through the gates in the morning’ the inspector went on to praise the ‘exceptionally successful’ teaching of phonics and the ‘meticulous’ work of teachers in ensuring the achievement of pupils in reading is ‘strong.’ Alongside, this the inspector found the curriculum to be ‘ambitious,’ with ‘pupils across the school enthusiastic about learning and proud of their achievements.’ Teachers were seen to be using their ‘expert knowledge to provide clear explanations and design tasks that support pupils to learn.’ The inspector commented that pupils relish using complex, technical vocabulary and, ‘feel empowered and confident because of their knowledge.’

Reflecting the Tenax Schools Trust’s commitment to both academic and character excellence we were delighted that the inspector was impressed with how all pupils embody the school’s values and benefit from the school’s ‘comprehensive extra curricular offer’ of clubs and opportunities to serve others.

This result is testament to the tremendous leadership of headteacher Jane Mallon, her deputy Becky White and the entire team of dedicated teachers and support staff whose commitment has been vital in securing this positive report. As the inspected commented, ‘Leaders are dedicated and passionate about the school’s development.’

Headteacher, Jane Mallon, comments that, “We are so pleased that Ofsted recognised our commitment to achieving excellence for all our children. So important to us, too, are the parts of the report that note the culture of positive behaviour, respect and kindness in our school. Our pupils who are Junior Chaplains are just one way we encourage all at Brenchley and Matfield to think about what they can do to serve and support others in need.”

Mark Cole, CEO of the Tenax Schools Trust adds, “All at Brenchley and Matfield should be exceptionally pleased of the praise received in this report. It is wonderful to read how empowering and confident pupils are because of the knowledge they learn from the school’s ambitious curriculum. As the new CEO of the trust I am looking forward to working with Jane and her team to build further on the very strong foundations that are clearly well established.
